This Winter we are...

If you grew up in South Africa, there is no doubt you had about a 100 pair of stokies {pronounced: 'stow-keys'}...they are a part of every kids childhood.

Functional, yes...pretty, no {unless you got lucky and had those bright pink ones...I loved my pink ones}

Inevitably the second you reach that age, where you have to buy your own slippers...stokies are not your first choice.

So when the husband...the very same husband who is the most stylish guy I know...asked me to go and buy him a pair...I was more than a little shocked. I think I might have even cracked a joke about his age...or something like that.

So while shopping for his new stokies, I decided that I needed a pair of new slippers too. But while standing in front of about 500 different styles, I quickly realised that I had tried out each and every one ...and nothing, not one of them compared to good 'ol fashioned stokies.

Yes, I did it...I grabbed a pair.

I do now know, that if any of you thought there was just a little bit of a fashionista in me...that's now completely gone...

But they are so comfy and warm...I guess our Mom's were always right about them hey?

This is such a flash back. I remember my navy blue pair of stokies. I used to love dragging my feet around and hearing that funny noise they make with those plastic ridges on the bottom.

This brings back memories! I was the proud owner of a pair of pretty turquoise ones, then red then blue then black ones :-)

All the boys in our house sport a pair of stokies but us girls rock in pink Hello Kitty ones. Although mine are through to the sole and the stokies are loudly calling my name in Woollies

I’m in desperate need of slippers. I haven’t had a pair for years. I walk around in my Hello Kitty Winter PJ’s and my summer slip slops, not very logical hey? I think I might just get myself a pair of stokies too :)

Stokies - I just remember my mom chasing us kids around the house to give us a hiding with hers. My daughter now has a pair and I laugh at the memories everytime she puts them on.

Because we don't have them I got my hands on a pair of fur-lined (fake, obvs) moccasins - they have a sole, so I can go out with the dogs if I need to in the snow/rain/whatever. I think some teenagers actually wear these as shoes but they do the job perfectly for warm slippers!

I never had stokkies as a kid!! :-( Why is that? (I survived being deprived of them okay I think) But, what blows my mind is when I see people sloffing around the shops in them! Gasp! Shudder! What??? (in the voice of Peanut)

At 65 now, I have never been without a pair of stokies in my life.
They're a cross between slippers an soft sole casuals at a 1/10th of the price
