A blue Friday.

When my sister announced that my nephew wanted a Smurf party for his 4th birthday...I quickly volunteered to make the cupcakes. But not just normal ones...with some blue icing...nope...I insisted on making actual blue cake cupcakes. My inspiration...this specific picture from Pinterest:
How hard could it be right?

So, on Friday night, armed with my three boxes of shop-bought cake mixture {enough for about 36 cupcakes}, blue colouring {from the fancy baking shop in Sandton City}, enough white butter icing to ice about 100 cupcakes...I had my camera on standby...because I was ready to blog about my awesome blue cupcakes. I started baking.

Everything started off well...I got my batter just right...the colour was perfect...
Until I had to bake them...so here's the thing:

1) You cannot tell, by looking at them if they are almost done...there is no golden colour. By the time I took them out they were a beautiful shade of grey!
2) I insisted on baking them without cupcake cups...because I wanted to show off the blue cake. And even after greasing the pans a million times...they stuck...I could only get the tops out.

So, at about 11h00 on Friday evening, and four separate batches later...all I had, was this...
...the night before the party...

I didn't have the heart to phone my Sister and stress her out So arrived at the party, bearing a measly nine blue cupcakes, that I managed to scrap out of the remaining batter...
Yip...so what was meant to be a post about how clever I was...and how I could be the next Martha Stewart {even if it was using box cake mixture}...this is was it...

Needless to say...we shall be ordering cupcakes next time around...

Oh Hayley!

This was so funny!

You ALWAYS need to bake with cupcake holders - you simply peel them back when you serve them.

I know that sinking feeling in your gut when you just know your wonderful well laid plans are not just working out!

Oh dear - I am a terrible baker as well - I also only use store bought mixes. But the final nine look great. :)

Oh, that would so be me. I have also had blogs in my mind about how clever I am and then...... Not so much.

I am sure your sister apprecaited the effort though.

Oh my goodness! I have done this more than once.... see the craft or food item, attempt to create said item, and results end up in trash. Oh well. At least you had 9! And they looked great!

10 out of 10 for all the effort! Sorry they didn't turn out well - what a pain! I still think the thought and attempt was awesome!

I had to laugh. I think it was mainly out of relief that this type of things happens to Martha types like you! I dont feel soooo bad right now... awesome idea though! and the end products looked delightful!

Well the 9 you got right ended up looking cool! Glad to see that I'm not alone in the lack of baking skills department - if you really want to wow people buy the Snowflake brownie mix - it comes complete with icing mix too - you can throw it together and they turn out seriously home-made looking and tasting absolutely delish - SNOWFLAKE - don't forget! I'm making a batch tomorrow!!

Oh no! Yep, definitely need to check them with a toothpick for doneness. :) AND, if you want to do these or anything else without liners, you need this in your life; it is awesome:
