Twitter Blanket Drive.

Just over a year ago...I got a call from my boss...her words..."What the hell have I done!"....

You see, just a few weeks before, she had tweeted this:
And within days it had crossed our country, and suddenly there were hundreds of people joining in...
The #Twitter Blanket Drive had been born. They collected just over 500 blankets.

And yesterday, the second #TBD was held at 14 venues across South Africa. Just ordinary people, jumping to help the less fortunate. One of my favourite tweeters and blogger {and real life friends} @jackiejvr, took it upon her self to host a venue in good 'ol Benoni. So, there was no doubt that we would go and support her..

Please excuse the dodgey pics...using my little muk en druk...
Twitter went crazy yesterday...I am so glad to have made a small contribution...and of course to meet up with some Tweeters in real life...
You can see some photos from the Sandton venue over at Jenty's website.

To all the hosts around the country and to everyone who donated...THANK YOU!

And of course, to the one and only Melanie...who phoned me yesterday saying "I can't believe this is happening"...well Mel, you did it again! I am so proud...and well done.

Let's do this again next year!

Edited to add: Benoni collected 106 blankets, 8 bags of clothes and 4 pillows. Plus an anonymous donation of R10 000 was made to the selected local charity.

Amazing how something this big only started with one persons idea.

Hi Hayley

We had 25 attendees, and we collected 106 blankets ranging in size from cute baby blankets to heavy double bed blankets, about 8 bags of clothes and 4 pillows in Benoni alone. And the TBD as a collective got cash donations, so my charity got a donation of R10 000 too.

I am overwhelmed by the support. It was so much more than i ever expected it to be when i signed up!

I cannot wait to see Adam's face when he sees the mountains of blankets tomorrow!

Thanks for your support. It was so nice to see you and Francois again.

Very nice blogpost Hayls! So glad the Benoni event was such a big success - it's no mean feat taking Twitter to 'Noni you know :-)

We'll be counting blankets for a while - great support and response this year.

Last night I got a pledge by a corporate to donate our first 6,000 blankets for #TBD 2012 (???), DJ Fresh has some crazy idea to turn it into a mini-music festival (OMG!!!) and so on and so on...

So, if you're ever looking for a job to make a difference on a different level, and work for free, let me know - because the chances are that I'll be #TBD'ing up a storm again next year.
