happy heritage day.

It's Heritage Day here in South Africa, which means it's another public holiday...we sure do love our public holidays here...we have hundreds of them...and trust me no one is complaining.

On Heritage Day, we also celebrate Braai Day.
Since I have started this little blog, I have had a few people ask me what on earth a braai is.

Simply put, a braai {pronounced: 'br-eye'}, is basically a BBQ, but with a South African twist. It is delicious, trust me. You cannot come to South Africa without having a braai, you just have too.
It is seriously our favourite thing to do. A weekend is just not a weekend without a braai {or two}, you can always smell a braai going on somewhere.

And what makes braaing so great, is that everyone does it. No matter if you are poor, rich, black, white, no matter what religion you are...everyone braais. It's the one thing that unites us completely. Now that's a great thing!

Happy braaing everyone!

My eldest brother emigrated to Holland years ago (before relocating to Australia about 7 years after that), and he invited all our extended family around (my dad is from there) for a traditional Safrican braai. He was outside, getting his 'braai' on, and they all sat inside around the dining room table wondering what on earth this crazy man from Africa was doing BUILDING A FIRE, and COOKING OUTSIDE!! Even the guys (whom you would have thought would have at least been interested inthe fire part) instead of standing around him with beers (as you do) were inside, thinking he was nuts!

Oh well, that's Holland for you.
